(MOUNT LAUREL, NEW JERSEY – July 15, 2026) Remember The Girls, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing awareness, research, and support for females affected by X-linked genetic conditions, has successfully completed its Miles in May fundraiser, surpassing its $10,000 fundraising goal by raising $11,868. All funds raised will directly support cutting-edge X-chromosome reactivation (XCR) research at the UC Davis Epigenome Editing Lab.

Thanks to the generosity of the Remember The Girls community and a $5,000 contribution from Will To Cure ALD, Remember The Girls has provided critical research funding that will support an entire sequencing run at the UC Davis Epigenome Editing Lab. The UC Davis Epigenome Editing Lab conducts innovative research focused on understanding and engineering epigenetic mechanisms to develop new therapeutic approaches for genetic diseases. This milestone will enable researchers to analyze up to 100,000 individual nuclei and compare multiple X-chromosome reactivation strategies within a single dataset.

“This funding represents an important step forward in our mission to accelerate research that could one day transform treatment options for females living with X-linked conditions,” said Taylor Kane, founder and executive director of Remember The Girls. “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who participated in Miles in May and helped make this investment in science possible.”

The sequencing effort will allow researchers to move beyond simply asking whether an X-chromosome reactivation strategy works. Instead, scientists will be able to determine which approaches are most effective, how consistently they work, and which cell populations respond best. These insights will help prioritize the most promising strategies for further development toward potential therapies.

“We are grateful to Remember The Girls and all of the supporters who made this research milestone possible,” said Dr. Julian Halmai, Assistant Professor in the UC Davis Department of Neurology and Cell and Gene Therapy Center, and Principal Investigator leading the Epigenome Editing Lab. “This donation will provide valuable data that can guide the development of more precise and effective approaches for X-chromosome reactivation.”

Advancing X-Chromosome Reactivation as a Potential Therapeutic Strategy

Many X-linked genetic conditions affect individuals because a gene on one copy of the X chromosome is not functioning properly. In females, there is often a healthy copy of the same gene on the second X chromosome. However, through a natural biological process called X-chromosome inactivation, that healthy copy is typically switched off, preventing cells from using the functional gene.

X-chromosome reactivation (XCR) is an emerging therapeutic approach designed to “turn back on” the normally inactive X chromosome. By restoring access to healthy gene copies, XCR has the potential to compensate for disease-causing genetic changes and restore lost gene function. Researchers are investigating XCR as a possible treatment strategy for a range of X-linked genetic disorders.

The support provided through Miles in May will help advance this promising area of research by generating critical data needed to identify the most effective reactivation strategies and move the field closer to future therapeutic applications.

Remember The Girls extends its deepest gratitude to all donors, participants, and supporters who helped make this achievement possible, with special thanks to Will To Cure ALD for its generous contribution.

About Remember The Girls:

Remember The Girls aims to break the stigma facing females impacted by X-linked conditions by providing them with tools to seek support, engage with research, and access family planning options, as well as by advocating for increased attention of medical professionals to the physical, emotional, and reproductive needs of this community.
