Navigating family planning can be challenging. We’re here to help.
As an X-linked carrier or affected female, there are many options to start or continue your family planning journey. You will find sections for each option, and within each there is an informational video created by a genetic counselor as well as videos featuring other carriers who have pursued this option.
Whatever method you decide to pursue, it’s important to meet with a genetic counselor ahead of time to ensure you have the most relevant information about each option and to get your questions answered.
Find the option that feels right for you.
There is no one size fits all when it comes to family planning. The best option is the one you decide is best for you and your family. The options below are listed alphabetically.
Adoption
Adoption is a legal process where one becomes the parent of a child for whom they are not the biological parent.
Amniocentesis
Amniocentesis is a prenatal procedure where amniotic fluid is drawn from the mother in the second trimester for genetic testing.
Chorionic villus sampling
CVS is a prenatal test in which a biopsy of the placenta is obtained vaginally or abdominally for genetic testing.
Donated Embryo
Use of a Donated Embryo occurs when extra embryos of a couple who underwent IVF are donated and chosen by a recipient.
Donor Egg
Utilizing a Donated Egg from a donor is combined with sperm to create embryos, then transferred to the recipient.
IVF with PGT
IVF with PGT is used to identify genetic or chromosomal differences in embryos before implantation into the recipient.
NIPS
NIPS is when blood from the mother is tested to screen for a handful of chromosome conditions during the pregnancy.
No Intervention
No Intervention entails making an active decision to have a child without intervention or genetic testing.
Not Having (More) Children
Not Having (More) Children is when a carrier feels like other options may not be the right choice for themselves or their family.
